Posted 3/1/2010Pornography, You Just Want Your Cake and Eat it too But You Know You Can't Legislate Morality
'You just want your cake and eat it too.' Of course I want to eat it too, what good is cake if you can't eat it?
'It's always the last place I look.' So glad you don't continue to look after you found it, smart guy.
'Can I ask you a question?' It's a little for that now isn't it?
'Has the bus come yet?' Yeah, I'm still standing here so that I can tell you that the bus already came.
'You can't legislate morality.' Then what do you legislate?
People have come accustomed to saying some strange things. However, most of the time when you point out to them the insanity of their cliché they will laugh along with you. Not so with that last quote, 'you can't legislate morality.' It doesn't really affect anyone's life to admit the inconsistency inherent in 'you just want to have your cake and eat it too', but to admit the obvious inconsistency in the phrase 'you can't legislate morality' levels a fatal blow to the prevailing morality of the day – relativism.
Of course all legislation is based on someones idea of morality. That is why the Christian philosopher Henry Vantil says, “culture is religion externalized.” All law is based on morality, which is the purview of religion, therefore the laws that order a culture reveal the established religion of that culture. The relativist is usually not even aware that his belief system is based as much, or more, on faith as that of any organized religion, and thus he is not aware that his idea of law is based on morality.
So, when you assert that pornography should be illegal, he spouts, 'you can't legislate morality', not realizing that by using the law to protect pornography he is legislating his morality. Do not be intimidated by the relativists claim that this is a free country, because they do not really believe that one should be free to do anything, and it does not take long to find something that they believe is wrong. The real issue is a difference in his definition of evil compared to your definition of evil.
Barry Lynn, founder of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, was once asked if the distribution of child pornography should be illegal. His answer was that it should be illegal to create the child pornography, but once it is created there should be no limits to how it is distributed. You can see that Barry Lynn is willing to limit freedom at some level, but his idea of limiting freedom is different from yours.
In most cases you will not be able to get your relativist friend to admit that his philosophy of law is based on religion, he is blinded by his faith in false doctrine. The important thing is that you are not intimidated into inactivity by his harangues of 'you can't legislate morality'. Maintain your faith in the truth of Christian scripture, and press on toward influencing culture for King Jesus. |
