Posted 3/24/2010The Great Commission
“It's all about me.” This sentiment is the natural outgrowth of the deification of man, which is the aegis of Secular Humanism. For Secular Humanism to reign the people must be dumbed down, and this has been remarkably accomplished. Tragically, this thinking, and this dumbing down, has infected the church in 21st century America, and it has perverted the scope of the great commission.
The great commission says, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (Matt 28:19-20).
There are three points in the great commission that need to be addressed to the church today. Taking them in order in the text the first and the third are related. First, note that the great commission starts by telling us to “teach”. Man, being sovereign, develops his belief system to suit his unique emotions and desires and no one can teach him anything unless it already fits his predetermined set of rules. Therefore, most people do not study the depths of anything to determine what is transcendently true, if it is true for them it is true.
Related to this is the third point, so jump to the end of Jesus' command where he says, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (emphasis added). Because the average Christian is not willing to dig deep into scripture there has been a disconnect between Old and New Testament teaching. Most Christians get bogged down by the Old Testament law books, thus they do not know the law and have no foundation for applying the law to life and society.
Finally, this relates the the second point that has been perverted by the influence of Secular Humanism on the mind of the Christian. Going back to the top of this passage, Jesus says, “teach all nations.” Because Christians have bought into the Secular Humanistic view of individualism, in which “it's all about me,” Jesus' teaching here has been reduced to a formula for solving the problems of individuals. Certainly in order to affect societies, one must deal with individuals, but note that Jesus says “teach all nations.” The focus being to bring all nations under the authority of King Jesus. The word “power” in verse 18 could be translated authority, so you can see that authority “is given unto” Him to fulfill the great commission.
Christians need to reject the ideas of Secular Humanism and search the deep things of God so they can accomplish His will of bringing all nations under His authority. Christians must cast off the banner “it's all about me” and replace it with truth that it is all about God. |
