Soli Deo Gloria, The Right Reason to Advance The Women's Revolution for Modest Dress

There is a growing movement within the Christian community to dress modestly. This movement is not entirely in response to Saturday night at the restaurant or movie house, it is partially in response to Sunday morning and the youth meetings in the churches. Everything about this movement is positive, but there is one caution for those in the movement to heed.

The sexual revolution of the 1960's and the secularization of the American society has fostered the loss of shame in the heart and mind of the American people. This lack of shame has resulted in a decline of modesty, especially in America's youth. In direct proportion with media and media personalities buying into the mindset of the sexual revolution, so have America's youth. The more media personalities push the envelope in regard to revealing themselves the more society degenerates. The fashion industry fell right into step with the parade to immodesty, and now they almost exclusively create revealing and debauched clothing.

This debauchery was bad enough when it was relegated to the dance clubs and the weekend parties. When immodesty hit the church pew it became apparent that society was leading the church into secularism. Those who understood the “salt and light” concept in scripture grew more and more concerned about this role reversal. This is what gave rise to the counter revolution – the women's revolution for modest dress.

An entire industry has grown out of this revolution. It is good that Christian entrepreneurs were inspired to meet the need for modest clothing for women, and it is encouraging that the modest clothing industry continues to grow. This is evidence that more women are joining the revolution. Whether this movement reverses the effects of the sexual revolution or not, only good can come from it.

However there is one caution of which all involved in the women's revolution for modest dress must be aware. It is human nature to think more highly of oneself than one ought. There will be a temptation to look down our noses at those in the church who have not caught the vision for modest dress. A practical measure to help overcome this temptation is to pray often “God deliver me from sin and self-righteousness”. Continue to empower womanhood with the beauty of modest dress, and believe that God will use your witness to advance His kingdom.

The first question in the Westminster Catechism is “what is the chief end of man?” and the answer is “to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” Christian women need to join the revolution for modest dress, but they need to join in order to glorify God, not to show how good they are. Christian entrepreneurs need to offer modest clothing for women as a means to glorify God, not self. By living modestly and in humility God will be glorified and He will affect society for His glory.
